Joy Rivers

By Fudail Griffin

Last time I cried tears of joy
I was kind of coy
it had nothing to do with a girl
but everything to do with a boy
being familiar with his profile
how he had to be prompted to smile
now with streams running
slow walking he can hear banks talking
birds conversing
relearning becoming his favorite person
accepting his experiences
understanding his traumas
detaching firing mechanisms from his triggers
clogging the barrel
concentrating more on the organs and soul under the apparel
remembering prayer in time of triumph and peril
his flow is backwards still
they evaporate into his tear ducts
internalizing the feelings
until he can pour the words flush
less consumed by if the words crush
as long as the man is built up
10 toes on floor but not healed up
nonetheless i'm blessed
I will run just like this river in due time.
large onion chopped fine
it's about time
run like rivers
run like being called nigger
by a angry mob
and they using God as an excuse to come and kill ya
run for your freedom
even while standing in place
sob loudly let freedom pour all over your face
til you dehydrated
because being your own damn
is damn hard on your flow
people want to fish here
but it's dry so you can hardly float
run boy leave it all soaked
run girl it's your only hope
no matter the what
whatever the when
whenever the how
however run now
now you is the where
where don't won't worry bout who
who not concerned with why
whatever the why you should cry
run
run run run
run run run run run
