I Rewind Time

By Pete Hyberger

to sit in that car with you forever,
a winter night where we slowly
freeze to death together.

Our skin greys.
Your eyelashes, ripening frostbite
in the deep blue light.

Frigid fingers,
ashen coolness,
I saltdrink your tears and movement stalls.

The only part of me still pulsing,
shredded clothes, shed our anger,
in a haze of hypothermia,

is that place on my neck where you kissed me once.
That glistening summer,
that heat of distant memory, fading

to this, dazzling torture,
this briskness of death.
Flush crystal coat

greets our lungs, our liver,
that scar on your cheek
from childhood clumsiness.

When at last
the morning light comes,
no heat comes with it
