Wonderstruck

By Gerry Sloan

(To Zoe on Turning Two)

Not many memories stay put,
but this one has deep roots.
Zoe reminds me each day
that life is a cabaret, even if
only Facetime before my wife

replaces washed wine glasses
in the wooden rack where they
stay suspended upside down,
continue swinging and gently
pinging almost like chimes

in the absence of wind. I still see
Zoe on our deck that day, face
upturned to the sky, arms
outstretched to greet the mystery
we adults have taken for granted.

Whether you call it manna,
God’s grace, or qi, she
has already figured it out,
and on a day like this
returns to remind me.
