Wait, Weight, Wait

By M. Shahid

i am not the one to bear all of this

this is meant for someone stronger than me

all this life that i can’t carry

all these hopelessly hopeful humans

all their resilience and joy

i don’t think i’m one of them

i feel like a radio host in the age of video stars

i’m not here to perform but rather inform

i feel like i’m in manual mode and everyone else

can automatically Be, and i have to be the one

to practice Being over and over

practicing expressions in the mirror

practicing what to say before it’s my turn to speak

practicing getting through manual mode faster

practicing dragging this weight around all the time

practicing by mirroring the ones who can Be

but it’s always wrong when I do it

i can’t have possibly been meant to be here

someone must’ve made a clerical error

on my way to existing
