A Fateful Moment

By R. Olaf Erich

We smiled at each other
Beneath the shade of the tree on the knoll.
The breeze hummed hollowly through shiny leaves,
Like the soft easy sound of a syrinx.
From somewhere an echoing church
Bell harmoniously tolled.
First, we sat, and then
Without words laid in the cool grass.
My back was refreshed.
I felt a blush as the flesh
Of our hands softly touched,
Like butterflies on rose petals.
Closing my eyes,
I drifted into shallow slumber.
Waking, I felt the sun slip away,
The breeze frolicking,
Your warm fingers softly
Wrapped around my hand
Like lovers nakedly entwined.
