People I used to know

By Silvestre Enriquez

For my best friend
I miss you my friend, my light, my muse.
You were the spark
that set my soul loose.
Before you, I was
just a shadow on the wall,
a body without meaning,
a name no one would call.
No love, no hate,
no truth, no fight
just nothingness
stretching through each night.
But then you came,
and something changed.
my mind was rearranged.
To know of love,
in even the smallest way,
can turn the darkness of life
to shades of day.
You gave me reason,
not with words,
but with your being.
You made me feel loved
you made me start seeing.
And now you’re gone,
just out of view…
but still, I carry pieces of you.
I wish I could see you again, old friend,
if only to say
You made me human and I’ll always love you.

My Father
My father was a man I hated for a long time,
but to be honest, we are a lot alike.
He wanted what I wanted,
dreamed like I dreamed,
but always fell short at the last moment.
Nothing ever went right for him,
and when it finally did,
the world ripped his victory from his hands,
tore out his heart,
and tossed his future away.
I keep thinking about what could’ve been,
thinking about what you wanted,
how simple the dream was
how similar we really are.
And it hurts.
Rest in peace to you,
and to a part of me.
