Tonight you are arguing with yourself

By JeFF Stumpo

Tonight you are arguing with
yourself over whether or not you
can fly. You don’t have wings, but
there’s something in you that
knows you would just float away
over the tops of the buildings,
something in you that says do it.
It’s not a voice, it’s a knowing. It’s
part of you, the part that wants
you to jump. There’s nothing to
distract you up here, on top of the
tallest building in a city you may
have created with your mind.
That’s how powerful you are. You
built an entire skyline. Surely
flying is easy. The knowing
knows more than you, it says. But
it doesn’t say. It’s not a voice. It’s
more assured than that. It’s more
assured than you, who doubt. No
more doubts, it knows. Only the
air under your body. You lean
forward. You know that soon it
won’t matter if the knowing is
wrong, and the knowledge feels
like a great wind inside you.
