What I Think About When I Don’t Think About You
The bitterness of cigarettes,
And matchsticks on a windy day;
The crunch of fries with extra cheese
Shredded haphazardly on top;
The shiver running down my spine
When I give my jacket away;
The length of my hand and
The silence of the cab
Taking me home;
The predicament of flightless birds
And their American mouths;
The grass trampled beneath sneakers
On morning runs through the park;
The emptiness of this city;
The great distance between cities;
The incompatibility of human hearts;
The five stages of grief;
The face of someone new;
Their beautiful poems
And delicate art;
Their soft hands
That remind me of spring;
Their warm voice
That reminds me of summer;
Their gentle smiles
That remind me of-
The hazy sunset kissing the hills
In a firestorm;
Talking to the moon
When there’s no one else;
This poem written in a blur
One hazy morning
When I’m not thinking about you.
