Where Have All the Voices Gone?
Silence echoes through the radio waves,
Where once bold chords would rise and break,
While scrolling through my playlist, no one's brave
Like those old songs that made the rafters shake.
Where are the Dylans of our troubled days?
The Joans, the Petes, who made their guitars ring?
When did we lose those fearless fighting ways,
When every coffee house knew how to sing?
The streets still burn, the people still cry out,
But Auto-Tune drowns the rebel yell,
Remember when musicians dared to shout
And had those burning truths they had to tell?
Man, I miss those raw and ragged songs,
When artists knew which side they stood upon,
The world's still hurting, still doing wrong,
But protest songs have turned to protest gone.
Can't we find that spirit once again?
That fire that made Woody's guitar speak?
We need those voices now like needed then,
To sing the truths the powerful won't leak.
