Word Tricks

By Linda Whittenberg

If I say, creaky floorboards,
you'll know it’s someone sneaking up
where they’re not wanted.
It seems indelicate to mention
names, so let’s just call say,
Fox in the hen house.

Let's say you played Hide and Seek.
You were never to go home
without calling first to make sure
Mother was there. That was
the rule. Grandparents lived
nearby; so you were to go there.
Only later you wondered why
Mother didn’t make different rules.

The line of cattle we raised
were bred to longhorns in Mexico.
He was a bull with bad manners
but we paid the bills. Anyway, it's
an old story, so common you wouldn't
want to hear it again in grubby detail—
I became a toreador.

A run-away, that’s how I felt
going off to college, leaving
her there If I simply write pills,
you'll know the rest of the story.
