Contrapuntal

By Natalie Johnson

Illustration by Allen B. Thangkhiew

I think I have to be good,                                            good at everything, good at being bad

Check the boxes and qualify                                    fulfill fantasies and bend to wills like wind

Every step on my good girl walk                              with bounce in my breast and tear in my eye

Brings me nearer to earning a place                       in your bed where I am safe and unsafe,

Arriving at yes, arriving at rest.                                 quiet in my mind as my body contorts

Travel travel travel                                                     sink sink sink

The road of thank you for having me                      in your hand, your mouth, your life

Thank you for being here                                           I appreciate you taking the time but

Hold my hand when I tell you                                    there probably will not be another;

There is no arrival.                                                     I must find a different struggle now.
